Wednesday, 06 March, 2024
The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) hosted its 2023 graduation ceremonies on 27 and 28 November at the Hotel Grand Hyatt Dubai. Close to 500 graduates from the School of Business, School of Computer Science, School of Engineering, and School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Health, along with their families and friends, gathered to celebrate this major milestone in their lives.
We were honoured by the presence of distinguished guests, such as HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Council for Border Crossing Points Security, and Her Excellency Bryony Hilless, Australian Consul-General in Dubai, who presented the undergraduates’ awards, along with UOWD President, Professor Mohamed Salem. The event was further brightened by the graduates' families and friends, their cheers and applause adding colour and joy to the celebration. The graduates were inspired by speeches from notable guests. Mr Moe Abeidat, CTO at Aramex, graced the undergraduate ceremony.
The postgraduate ceremonies welcomed Ian Johnston, Chief Executive of the DFSA, and Jessica Smith, a Paralympian and advocate for diversity and inclusion. Ms Smith's story of overcoming physical challenges to become a world-class athlete and a global influencer resonated deeply, embodying the spirit of determination and excellence. Mr Ian Johnston, Chief Executive of the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), inspired through his humility and perseverance.
Adding a personal touch to the ceremonies, the Vote of Thanks speeches were delivered by three representatives. Sulaima Hallak, a Master of International Business graduate, and Mr Hussein Hamdoun, a Master of Educational Studies graduate, spoke at the postgraduate ceremonies, while Maryam Zia, a Bachelor of Computer Science graduate, represented the undergraduate ceremony. Their speeches encapsulated the experiences and aspirations of their peers.
UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Patricia Davidson extended her warm wishes to the students through a heartfelt video message, saying, "This is a special occasion for all of us - friends, families, teachers. But especially for our graduates, it marks the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment. My hope is that your time at the University of Wollongong has not only shaped you into the person you are today but has also instilled a sense of curiosity, empathy, and compassion that you will carry throughout your life."
As the UOWD's Class of 2023 graduation ceremonies concluded, the graduates stepped into a new chapter of their lives. This momentous occasion was not just a farewell to their time at the university, but a gateway to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Armed with knowledge, skills, and memories from their journey at UOWD, these graduates are now ready to make a positive impact in the world around them.
