From Theory to Practice: Computer Science Students Showcase Real-World Solutions at the Innovation Fair
Friday, 05 April, 2024
The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) recently hosted the Computer Science Innovation Fair at the Data Science, Discovery and Innovation Centre in Expo City Dubai. Sixteen teams of our final-year computer science students presented their work, demonstrating their skills and abilities in various technological domains, such as ed-tech platforms and eco-friendly ride-sharing apps.
The fair was a significant achievement for our students, not only academically but also in terms of career progression. It served as an important stepping stone, providing opportunities for many students to secure internships and job interviews. Notable, the top five teams, consisting of 25 students, secured internships based on their remarkable performances. Additionally, eight students received on-the-spot interviews, with potential job offers expected in the following weeks.
This edition of the Computer Science Innovation Fair at UOWD was a testament to the real-world applications of the current technological landscape. The projects showcased by our students were not just theoretical concepts but practical solutions that can drive significant changes across various sectors.
Team Breakthrough's SafeCall, for instance, showcased the application of machine learning in enhancing communication security, an innovation increasingly vital in an age rife with deepfake technology. Similarly, Team Mirage's ByteNews project harnessed machine learning algorithms to tackle media bias, reflecting a growing need for balanced information dissemination in the digital era. These projects, among others, not only highlighted our students' technical proficiency but also their engagement with the most pressing technological challenges of our times.
Team Telos secured first place with their project, VOOP (Visualize OOP), a learning tool designed for Object-Oriented Programming. The project simplifies the understanding of OOP using interactive 2D diagrams and natural language processing to provide personalised learning recommendations. In second place, Team MindScape presented POOL, a mobile ride-sharing application focused on cost-efficiency and sustainability. In third place, Team Tridents developed AspieByte, an adaptive learning platform designed for individuals on the autism spectrum, providing a tailored and inclusive educational experience.
The evaluation process was comprehensive, considering not only the innovative ideas but also their execution and the teams' presentation skills. Thepanel of judges included experts from both academia and industry, such as:
- Jeevan Badigari, Co-Founder & CISO at CyberForceHQ
- Melvis Furtado, Business Head at Trellissoft, Inc.
- Muhammad Hamad, Manager Service Performance at Help AG, an e& enterprise company
- Vikas Bajpai, General Manager Digital Solutions & Services at Oasis Investment Company (Al Shirawi Group)
- Joseph Aninias, Director of Information Management and Technology Services at Abu Dhabi University
- Burhan Jaber, Engineering and R&D Director at SKM Air Conditioning LLC
- Elizaveta Galkina, Head of Partnerships at SPACE SAUCE
- Pavel Gorbunov, CEO and Founder of SPACE SAUCE
Jeevan Badigari, Co-Founder and CISO at CyberForceHQ and one of the judges, highlighted, "I was very impressed with the students' creativity and ingenuity. They've put in incredible amounts of hard work. It was a pleasure evaluating their projects.”
The fair is more than just an academic exercise; it is a testament to the students' ability to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. As Prof May ElBarachi, Head of the Computer Science School, states, "It allows us to celebrate our students and gives them the opportunity to showcase what they are capable of, not only in terms of ideas and technology but also in their communication and teamwork skills. We couldn’t be prouder of our students.”
