Young Entrepreneurship Competition: Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
Thursday, 16 January, 2025
The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) brought the entrepreneurial spirit to life with the successful conclusion of the Young Entrepreneurship Competition (YEC) organised by the School of Business. This exciting event offered UOWD students a platform to demonstrate their innovative ideas and business acumen, while gaining invaluable experience in the real-world dynamics of entrepreneurship.
The competition attracted 120 students, who formed 22 teams to compete in the first phase. Participants were tasked with pitching their business ideas, honing their skills in areas like marketing, budgeting, operations management, and strategic planning. Following the pitch round, the participants moved on to the second phase, where they set up stalls to bring their business ideas to life and engage with customers.
By encouraging creative and innovative business ideas, YEC fostered a culture of innovation, where students were able to bring their ideas to life. Participants moved beyond theoretical knowledge, applying what they had learned to dynamic, real-world challenges. Additionally, the competition provided a valuable networking platform, allowing participants to connect with industry professionals and opening doors to mentorship, internships, and career opportunities.
The competition showcased a diverse range of creative business ideas. For instance, K&T Mocktails offered theme-based drinks like the Space Mojito and LaLaLemonade, while CharmSpot allowed customers to design personalized bracelets by selecting individual charms. HeatInk created customized items, and Sweet Street offered a variety of delicious pre-packaged sweets. Other notable businesses included Pixeloids, which specialized in capturing memories through film, The Crafty Teapot, a café for crafting, boba, and good eats, and The Heat Ink, which created personalized items with customized designs on t-shirts, bags, and keychains. These businesses, along with others, demonstrated the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the participants.
For many participants, the competition was more than just a chance to pitch ideas—it was an opportunity to gain real-world experience, develop entrepreneurial skills, and make meaningful connections with industry professionals. “YEC provided us with a platform to transform ideas into actions, fostering creativity and strategic thinking,” said Team Tacolicious. “Through this experience, we learned how to create a business concept, understand customer needs, and market our products effectively,” shared Team K&T Mocktails, the winners of the competition.
The winners of the competition were K&T Mocktails, with CharmSpot and Heat Ink securing first and second runner-up positions. All the participating teams demonstrated resilience, creativity, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by entrepreneurs.
The YEC event served as a celebration of innovation, highlighting the entrepreneurial drive of UOWD students and the university’s commitment to providing opportunities that bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experience.
